Adrenal Health
In the fast-paced world we live in, stress has become second nature to many. Our bodies are not made to keep up with the demand of stress the way we do. The nervous system and adrenal glands play a crucial role in protecting the body from various physical, mental, emotional, and relational stressors.
The Role of the Adrenal Glands
The adrenal glands produce cortisol, adrenaline (epinephrine), and DHEA. Cortisol is the “primary stress hormone,” regulating blood sugar, blood pressure, and immune function. Adrenaline provides the immediate “fight-or-flight” response. DHEA contributes to energy levels and immune support but declines with chronic stress.
Chronic Stress
Prolonged exposure to stressors leads to consistently elevated cortisol levels. It suppresses immune function, disrupts sleep patterns, contributes to weight gain (especially around the abdomen), and can impair cognitive function, diminishing memory and concentration.
Functional Approach to Assessing Adrenal Function
We utilize advanced lab testing including serum/blood tests, salivary cortisol testing, and urinary adrenal metabolite testing to assess cortisol levels throughout the day and provide a comprehensive picture of adrenal activity.
